This vintage displays a deep, dark ruby color and an aromatic bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and cherries, complemented by complex notes of leather, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with powerful, well-integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of dark fruit, cocoa, and sweet spices are balanced by subtle oak and a touch of earthy minerality. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of dried herbs and a refined minerality.
Aalto Bodegas y Vinedos is a Ribera del Duero estate known for its varietal red wines made from Tempranillo. Its top wine, PS, is released in small quantities and only in the best vintages. It is widely considered to be one of Spain’s best wines. Aalto has 110 hectares (270 acres) of contracted vineyards in Ribera del Duero, as well as 20ha (50 acres) of younger vines in Valladolid. The contracted vineyards have vines that are between 40-100 years old, and are grown on a complex variety of soils. The P.S. (Pagos Seleccionados) wine is selected from the very best plots, or pagos, within the vineyards. The modern winery at Quintanilla de Arriba, some 40km (25 miles) east of Valladolid, was completed for the 2005 vintage. It has gravity-flow systems for moving wine, a low-temperature room to cool harvested grapes before destemming, custom-designed tanks in wood, concrete and stainless steel, and underground barrel halls. The standard Aalto Ribera del Duero wine usually spends 20 months in oak, 50 percent of which is new French wood, with the remainder in older French and American barrels. PS is aged for 24 months in new French barrels.
