      Producer Information

Langmeil Winery is a South Australian wine producer of the Barossa Valley, known for its old-vine Shiraz. Langmeil produces a number of other varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache as well as white wines from Riesling and Chardonnay, bearing the neighboring Eden Valley appellation. The founding of the vineyards dates back to plantings by German immigrant Christian Auricht in 1843. The first Shiraz vines have survived in a small 1.5 hectare (3.7 acre) vineyard that has since been christened The Freedom vineyard, as Auricht had left Prussia to escape religious persecution. The vines are thought to be some of the oldest surviving Shiraz vines in the world. This vineyard is the source for the company’s flagship wine: the Langmeil single-vineyard Freedom 1843 Shiraz. Langmeil produce wines from a wide range of other grape varieties, a majority of which are bottled as varietals. Despite the Barossa’s German heritage, the Italian varieties of Barbera and Montepulciano are produced under the Village wine range. This also includes a Sparkling Shiraz, a style of which is one of the region’s iconic contributions to the wine market. The first winery on the estate was built in 1932 by Auricht’s descendants. The property and winery went through difficult times and traded hands several times in the 1970s and 1980s, during a significant decline in the Australian wine market, until at one point in the early 1990s it was left idle. In 1996, it was bought again with the new owners restoring the winery and successfully saving the neglected Freedom vineyard and its old vines. The first vintage was released in 1997 under the Langmeil Winery label, in honor of the German settler town of the 19th Century that had since been folded into the nearby town of Tanunda.
