Origin and Vineyard
From Henschkes iconic Hill of Grace vineyard in Eden Valley, the 2004 vintage reflects the character of dry-grown, pre-phylloxera vines planted in the 1860s. Situated in a cool, elevated site, this single-vineyard Shiraz captures the grace, depth, and longevity that define Australias most prestigious wines.
Vintage Conditions and Winemaking
The 2004 season was mild and well-balanced, with ideal ripening conditions producing fruit of great concentration and structure. Hand-harvested grapes were fermented in traditional open fermenters and matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads for 18 months before bottling.
Tasting Profile
Colour: Deep crimson with a garnet rim.
Nose: Complex layers of blackberry, plum and black cherry, alongside hints of sage, anise, clove, black pepper, and faint rose petal.
Palate: Powerful yet elegant, with rich dark fruits, sweet spice, graphite and fine tannins. The wines structure is both refined and commanding, finishing long and composed with exceptional balance and depth.
Cellaring Potential
Although beautifully expressive now, this wine was built to last. With proper cellaring, it continues to evolve gracefully and may reach its peak well beyond two decades from vintage.
Serving Suggestions
Ideal with roasted lamb, venison, truffled dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Decanting is recommended to allow full aromatic development.
